Reserve Overview
South Endeavour Station was the first property acquired by Endeavour Conservation. South Endeavour Nature Refuge covers 7, 000 hectares of highly diverse ecosystems. The reserve is focused along the valley of the historic Endeavour River, twenty kilometres west of Cooktown. From the river the landscape rises sharply on both sides with spectacular cliffs of Laura Sandstone on the Henderson Range to the north and the Dickson Range to the south. The Henderson Range features beautiful palm-lined spring fed creeks in its protected gorges while the top of the range is covered in heathland reflecting its extreme exposure to the salt laden southeasterly trade winds.
Endeavour Conservation bought this property in 2007 to protect it from subdivision and overdevelopment given its proximity to Cooktown.
protecting wildlife, sustaining life
Species and Habitats
Endeavour Conservation is home to a diverse array of tropical ecosystems from beautiful grassy tropical savanna woodlands to semi-deciduous vine thickets, gallery rainforest, palm forests and heathland. It protects habitat for a wide range of threatened species including a large population of endangered Northern Quoll, the endangered Ghost Bat, and the vulnerable listed black-footed tree-rat. Bird life is prolific.

Conservation Highlights
“Landscape-scale conservation means restoring the health of entire ecosystems, not just isolated or fenced-off areas.”
